How Supply Chains Also Feel Cyber Shock

Jaguar Land Rover Cyber Attack:

Jaguar Land Rover, the UK’s biggest carmaker, has been forced to halt production after a major cyber incident on 1 September 2025. With factories in Solihull, Halewood and Wolverhampton offline, the company is losing thousands of vehicles a week  and the damage doesn’t stop at JLR’s gates.

The disruption is rippling through the entire supply chain. Parts suppliers face cancelled or delayed orders, smaller firms are struggling with cashflow and some have already laid off staff. Dealerships and garages are also hit, with spare-parts systems down and routine servicing delayed. Because JLR sources globally, suppliers in Europe and beyond are also affected.

This shows just how dependent modern manufacturing is on digital systems. A single cyber attack can ripple from IT into production, logistics, jobs and communities. The government is now working closely with JLR and industry groups to keep suppliers afloat, but recovery could take months.

The lesson? Resilience matters as much as efficiency. Lean supply chains and just-in-time models make the industry more vulnerable to shocks. Stronger cyber defences, supplier support and contingency planning will be essential to protect not just automakers, but the thousands of businesses and workers who rely on them.

Cyber threat snapshot – UK

  • 43% of all UK businesses hit by a cyber-attack or breach in the past year

  • Micro (1–9 staff): 41%

  • Small: 42%

  • Medium: 67%

  • Large/Enterprise: 74%

Phishing tops the charts as the most common attack vector. Bigger firms see more incidents, partly higher exposure, partly better detection.

Trend-wise: reports were ~39% in 2022, ~50% in 2024, and now over 40% in 2025 – showing cyber threats aren’t going away, they’re evolving.
